DESCRIPTION:Veteran and military historian Dan Heaton will discuss the history of Selfridge Air National Guard Base from World War I's flying machines to today's battle-tested 21st century aircraft at the Rochester-Avon Historical Society meeting on Thursday\, May 3\, 2018 at 7 P.M. in the Multipurpose Room at the Rochester Hills Public Library\, 500 Olde Towne Rd. Heaton will discuss interesting accounts of the base's 100-year history\, touching upon the Tuskegee Airman\, the events of September 11\, 2001\, and a secret departure of dozens of Selfridge pilots of the eve of World War II.\n\n\n\nAfter serving on active duty in the Air Force\, Heaton worked for more than 20 years as a news reporter and editor for both newspapers and radio. He currently is on active duty once again\, serving as a public affairs specialist at Selfridge AFB. \n\n\n\nHe has written three books: Forgotten Aviator: The Bryon Q. Jones Story\, Selfridge & Collins: The Life & Times of Military Aviation Pioneers Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge and Capt. Phelps Collins\, and Forts & Fields:  A History of Michigan's Military Places.  A fourth book\, Selfridge Field: A Centennial History has been written but not published yet.\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required.
