What is Polio? Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. Poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis within hours. It can strike people of any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio can be prevented by vaccines, but it is not curable. Unlike most diseases, polio can be eradicated.
For more than 35 years, Rotary and its partners have driven the effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where political insecurity, highly mobile populations, difficult terrain, and vaccine refusal/misinformation pose unique challenges to ridding the world of this dreaded disease. However, the recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in New York is a stark reminder that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere. With perseverance, sufficient resources, the commitment of national governments, and improved access to remote areas, we can eliminate polio—once and for all.
