Gardens planted last year by adults with disabilities are growing into a second season as Genisys Credit Union continues its partnership with Dutton Farm to tend beds at Nelson Park’s Community Garden in Sterling Heights. The collaboration provides meaningful community involvement, empowering adults with disabilities to connect with nature and create an impact.

For clients of Dutton Farm, a non-profit, the gardens are about more than growing food, it’s about growing skills, taking pride in their contributions, and experiencing inclusion in their community. Last year, the team successfully maintained two in-ground beds that produced tomato plants, basil, green bell peppers, and more. Clients maintained the gardens weekly, harvesting the produce to both donate to families in need and sell at their farm market.

For 2026, the credit union is funding three garden beds, which include a raised bed space to provide increased accessibility for participating clients. The continued investment builds on the organization’s shared commitment to belonging.

The Sterling Heights Community Garden at Nelson Park opened in the spring of 2025 and features over 115 garden beds, a children’s garden, native plant areas, a bee apiary, a butterfly conservatory, a microforest, and public art, making it a vibrant space for community members and businesses alike to enjoy.
