Rochester Regional Optimist Club Celebrates Student Voices in 2026 Essay Contest

The Rochester Regional Optimist Club proudly announces the completion of its 2nd Annual Student Essay Contest, celebrating the power of youth service and community engagement.

This year’s essay topic, “How My Acts of Service Help Me Understand What My Community Means to Me,” invited seventh and eighth grade students to reflect on the importance of giving back and the role service plays in shaping their connection to their community.

The contest, one of the signature programs of Optimist International, was offered to students across all four Rochester Community middle schools. A total of 27 thoughtful and inspiring entries were submitted, each highlighting unique perspectives on service, empathy, and community pride.

After careful review, three outstanding essays were selected as top honors. Each student received a medal, certificate of placement, and a stipend in recognition of their achievement:

  • 1st Place: Ethan Cheung, Reuther Middle School
  • 2nd Place: Ella Baucus, Van Hoosen Middle School
  • 3rd Place: Emily Wang, Hart Middle School

Ethan Cheung’s first-place essay will now advance to the Michigan District Optimist competition, where it will be judged alongside other winning entries from Optimist Clubs across the state.

“The essay contest continues to be a meaningful way to encourage young people to engage with their communities and reflect on the impact of their actions,” said a representative of the Rochester Regional Optimist Club. “We are incredibly proud of all the students who participated and shared their stories.”

The Rochester Regional Optimist Club remains dedicated to supporting youth and fostering opportunities that inspire leadership, service, and positive community involvement.
