New sport management minor launches at Oakland University this fall

Starting in fall 2025, Oakland University students will have the opportunity to pursue a new academic minor in sport management, designed to prepare graduates for dynamic careers in sports marketing, event coordination, compliance and more.

This addition comes in response to growing demand from students, advisors and athletic staff seeking more specialized academic pathways in the field. Many students are actively preparing for careers or graduate studies in sport management and are seeking on-campus opportunities to enhance their skills and marketability. As a Division I institution located in the Metro Detroit area, a region rich in professional sports organizations, OU is uniquely positioned to support this interest.

"Pursuing a career path in the sports industry is challenging and rewarding," said Molly Gustafson, special instructor of marketing. "Many of our students have an affinity for sports and want to begin their careers or make moves within the industry. Our program is unique because it delivers a business-centered foundation specializing in the sports industry, enhancing students' competitive edge."

According to the Global 2025 Sports Marketing Report, the sports industry is booming and it’s only getting bigger. In 2024, the global sports market was worth $477.8 billion, and it’s expected to grow to more than $507 billion in 2025. That’s a steady climb, thanks to factors like the growth of increased fan engagement, broadcasting and streaming technologies, globalization and expansion into emerging markets, increased investments and partnerships and sports-related ventures.

“Program graduates are prepared for careers in professional and collegiate athletics, recreational programs and the growing sector of sport-related services that support athlete development and active lifestyles,” Gustafson continued.

The five-course minor blends essential knowledge in sport marketing, services, law and governance, giving students a strong foundation to build on. With the flexibility to choose an elective, students can tailor the program to match their interests. Open to all undergraduate students, this minor enhances career readiness in the dynamic world of sports.
